There was no significant shift up or down in new COVID-19 cases among the student bodies of the University of Alabama, UAB or UAH this week, according to new data released on the UA System COVID-19 Dashboard.

64 students at the University of Alabama tested positive for the virus from October 23 - 29th, down slightly from 68 new cases the week before.

At UAB, there were 52 new cases among students this week, down from 63 last week.

Numbers rose slightly at UAH, where 17 students tested positive this week over 11 from last week.

All three campuses also reported single-digit new coronavirus cases among faculty, staff and other employees.

Isolation space on all three campuses remains largely unoccupied, with 20 quarantine rooms in use in Tuscaloosa, 7 in Birmingham and 13 in Huntsville.

As cases spike nationwide in a "third wave" of new cases, the lack of eye-catching news in the UA System may be good news in and of itself.

Tuscaloosa's relatively low numbers also come two weeks after the Alabama Crimson Tide took on the Georgia Bulldogs in Bryant-Denny Stadium, suggesting that reduced capacity in the stadium, banning on-campus tailgating and other preventative measures have been effective in reducing the spread of the virus through the student body.

"The extensive health and safety protocols on the three UA System campuses are effectively controlling the virus spread," a spokesperson said in a release Friday.
