Anniston

My friends that live in Anniston swear by Effina’s and their desserts. Their menu offers tiramisu, ultimate chocolate cake, New York-style cheesecake, White Chocolate Bread Pudding, and a Chocolate Turtle Cake ala mode. What a hard decision. My recommendation, grab five friends, and everyone gets a different dessert and share. Also, I have on my list to try is The Scampi Pizza. It had me when it said Scampi butter sauce. Also the Honey Habanero pork chop looks amazing.

Day Trip Suggestion: Be sure to check out the Anniston Museum of Natural History.

Decatur

Be sure to add Big Bob Gibson’s Bar-B-Q in Decatur to your must-try list.  This bar-b-q was found in 1925 by Bob Gibson, an “L & N railroad worker who honed his cooking skills on the weekends, in a hand-dug barbecue pit.” From smoked wings to loaded baked potatoes, the bar-b-q is the star. As for me, sign me up for the beef brisket platter with kettle baked beans, red skin potato salad, green beans, and a slice of peanut butter pie. I talk about the white sauce too, yummy!!!!!

Day Trip Suggestion: Spend some time at the Cook Museum of Natural History.

Gadsden

A great day trip is to Gadsden. Be sure to plan to have a meal at Harp & Clover. They serve up awesome food and host a lively atmosphere. My friends swear by their Brie & Bison Burger, which has ground bison, melted brie, onion jam, bacon, and roasted garlic aioli. Chef’s Kiss!

Day Trip Suggestion: You can’t visit Gadsden without visiting the Noccalula Falls.

Jasper

If you are in the mood for breakfast, this Jasper spot will hit the spot. Jimmy’s Egg serves up the best breakfast. The only Alabama location is in Jasper. They do have places in just a few other states. You can craft your own three-egg omelette, drool over the cinnamon crunch French toast, or take in the farmer’s skillet. My friend’s go-to meal is the Garbage breakfast that combines hash browns with sausage crumbles along with grilled onions and bell peppers.

Day Trip Suggestion: Check out the Bankhead House and Heritage Centre.

Troy

I have a high school friend that lives in Troy. He talks about the filled croissants from Dolce Pastry Shop. I will have to pass through Troy at the right time during my next drive to Florida. He said the Mocha-Cream Cheese Croissant would have you speaking in a different language.

Day Trip Suggestion: Be sure to experience the Pioneer Museum of Alabama.

As a typical foodie would say, there are so many cities to cover in Alabama with awesome spots to have an interesting meal. So, there will be part 3 and maybe even part 4. If you have a suggestion, send me an email.
