It didn’t take director Ari Aster long to follow up his breakthrough horror film Hereditary. This summer, he returns with Midsommar a spooky-looking thriller about a troubled couple (played by Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor) who take a trip to a Swedish village for a summer festival that — SPOILER ALERT — goes really, really, really, (really) bad. Watch the new trailer above.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

Dani (Florence Pugh) and Christian (Jack Reynor) are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing. From the visionary mind of Ari Aster comes a dread-soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight.

Part of what made Hereditary so creepy was its shadowy atmosphere; a lot of the film took place at night, on darkened roads and in shadowy hallways. Midsommar in contrast, is all shot in blinding sunlight; the characters even note in the trailer how it never gets dark where they are. That’s a bold choice of setting for horror (and a bold choice of spelling for the word midsommar). The film opens in theaters on July 3.
