Local and federal police are searching for a 19-year-old believed to have been involved in the Saturday afternoon shooting at the University Mall that seriously injured two people.

In a press conference Tuesday, Captain Marty Sellers of the Tuscaloosa Police Department said that shortly after investigators shared a surveillance photo of the suspect Monday, tips about his identity started coming in.

Sellers said police now believe the suspect is 19-year-old Lamarcus Daequan Jones. He said Jones was one of three people armed during the shootout Saturday that sent a 24-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl to DCH Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Sellers said police from area agencies and federal officers from the US Marshals Task Force are actively searching for Jones at this time.

He also thanked the community for its rapid response to police sharing the surveillance photo they believe depicts Jones Monday.

"Community involvement and partnering with us, that results in arrests," Sellers said.

The police captain said Jones is to be considered armed and dangerous and pleaded with the 19-year-old to see reason and turn himself into authorities.

"We want him to be safe. We want him to turn himself in and we want him safely in our custody," Sellers said. "We don't want anyone else injured in this case."

As far as what led to the shooting Saturday afternoon and how it unfolded, Sellers declined to release any additional details and said more information may become available in the future.

He added that more suspects may be developed and multiple arrests made in the case.
