Since today (July 22, 2020) is National Mango Day, I figured I would share my very first business with you; it was a mango stand in the front of my house on North East 6th Street in Pompano Beach, Florida.  We had a massive mango tree in our backyard, and it would supply me with many mangoes for my business for many years.  Mango season in South Florida is May through October, with the peak being July.  My mother, who was in banking, (she was the one who saved money in our household and kept the budget), is one who introduced the idea of learning how to conduct business.  She explained how to set up the business, a profit and loss margin, selling tactics, taught me how to make the change, and even gave me seed money for my till.  My father taught me how to use the fruit picking tool and helped me collect the mangoes.  My till was five dollars and was my father’s old cigar box.

My business plan was to use my charm, wit, and cuteness to sell out each day.  The night before, I would hand wash each mango because mangoes can get sticky because of the tree sap.  I figure that was a selling point.  I set up shop every morning and afternoon in the front of the house, dragging out the card table, chair, and umbrella to the front.  I sold my mangoes for 25 cents each for five for a dollar.  Later on, I provided a separate stand with a knife and napkins so that you could eat your mango on the spot.  Needless to say, between the prices and my cuteness, I was sold out every day, my mother was proud.

Mangoes are a way of life in South Florida.  My mother made many mouthwatering delicacies from our “household” mangoes like fresh mango juice, mango ice cream, mango frozen popsicles, sun brewed mango tea, mango jelly, mango chicken salad, mango rice, mango relish, mango tarts, and of course, just sliced mangoes.  When I can get my hands on mangoes, I make the same but add in some adult fun, with a mango margarita.
