The two victims injured in a shooting outside Tuscaloosa's University Mall Saturday afternoon remain hospitalized but are in stable condition, police said in a Monday morning update.

Captain Marty Sellers, an investigator with the Tuscaloosa Police Department and the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said the victims are a 24-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl. Both were struck by bullets during a shootout near an entrance to the mall Saturday.

Sellers said the VCU is "pursuing several leads and looking for persons of interest" in the case, but no arrests have been made as of Monday morning. He called it a "very active and ongoing investigation," and said he would release more information to area media as it becomes available.

He called on families, churches and other community leaders to step up and help prevent young people in the Druid City from illegally obtaining firearms and using them at the slightest provocation.

He also said reversing the troubling trend would require help from state legislators in Montgomery and from federal leaders in Washington D.C.

"We've gotta get these damn guns off the streets," Maddox said.
