A large 10 and a half foot alligator weighing 400 pounds was struck by 2 cars Monday night on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fosters.

Gators are definitely a rare sight around West Alabama, especially one of this size! You just don't hear about it. It is believed this one was 20 to 30 years of age, and lived in a nearby pond.  More specifically near I-20/59 and the western bypass.  However, due to injures suffered to the head and tail from being run over by the 2 cars, wildlife officials decided to put him down.

It sure does make you wonder, are there more where this one came from? Experts say there is no reason to panic.

Officer Latham encouraged people to not worry as quoted by AL.com:

We don't want people to get alarmed. They're wild animals, but they're just as scared of you as you are of them. We just tell people to respect their distance.
