Business Insider is reporting that Sears Holding Company, which also owns Kmart, is closing 72 more stores this year. This is in addition to the more than 180 closings that have already been announced this year.

The company released a list earlier today of the additional closings, which include 49 Kmart stores, 16 Sears stores, and 7 auto centers. Most of these stores are said to be closing in September. This will bring the Kmart/Sears store count to approximately1200, down from 2,073 just five years ago.

Are the Tuscaloosa Kmart (Skyland Boulevard) and Sears (University Mall) safe? For the time being, it appears so. However, there are two Kmart stores in Alabama that WILL be closing in September. They are the Dothan and Muscle Shoals Kmart locations. There are no Sears stores in Alabama currently on the list.
