Sex Pistols legend Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) honored a late fan while performing with Public Image Ltd. in Frome, England. At the request of the fan’s sister, Lydon spread the man’s ashes onstage by throwing them up in the air between songs.

PiL performed at Cheese and Grain in Frome on June 27, but the venue owners probably didn’t expect anything quite like this. After announcing that a Public Image fan named Stuart had recently died, Lydon told the crowd, “His sister has asked me to spread [his ashes] on the stage tonight, and I think that’s one of the nicest, most humblest things.”

Lydon continued, “This is for Stuart, a fan whose request is his ashes be spread on the PiL stage. Stuart, we love you! In memory! Stuart!”

The PiL frontman then took what looked to be an envelope, opened it and threw Stuart’s ashes into the air. Fans cheered as the grey mist was launched into the air, continuing the clapping as PiL began the next song.

John Lydon shared the footage, which was shot by Stuart’s sister, through his personal Twitter earlier this morning (July 9). Watch Lydon fulfill the fan’s final wish in the clip above.
