It’s hard to ignore the success NFL teams had this past season reuniting college wide receivers with their former quarterbacks. Ja’Marr Chase teamed up with his former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow and helped lead the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl. Jaylen Waddle set a new NFL record for most catches by a player in his rookie season (104) with his former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and John Metchie believes he could have similar success with Mac Jones in New England.

"It's definitely something I've heard, and especially seeing the trend of teams liking to unite quarterbacks and receivers or just former teammates together," Metchie said. "I think Mac 10 and I would be special, for sure."

Metchie caught 55 passes for 916 yards and six touchdowns from Jones in 2020. The Crimson Tide finished the season with a perfect 13-0 record and a 52-24 route over Ohio State in the national championship.

"Mac and I are really close," Metchie said. "He was my quarterback that year, so Mac and I got along really well. We also spent a lot of time together my freshman year on the two team, so we have a lot of chemistry."

The Crimson Tide receiver John Metchie says he had a “very good” meeting with Patriots representatives in Indianapolis this week and spoke about the culture similarities between Alabama and New England.

“The Patriots are really similar to Alabama as far as structure of team with coach Belichick over there and coach Saban at Alabama,” Metchie said. “I think the structure created by both coaches creates for a winning environment.”

As a junior in 2021, Metchie reeled in a team-high 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight scores, earning Second-Team All-SEC honors. The Crimson Tide wideout suffered a torn ACL against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 4, but he plans to be fully healthy before training camp.

"In June I should be cleared, no restrictions," Metchie said.

The 2022 NFL draft will be held in Las Vegas Thursday, April 28 through Saturday, April 30 and air on ESPN.
