Jim James Releases NASA-Inspired ‘Everything (The Universe)’

Jim James of My Morning Jacket has become the latest musician to lend his talents to help commemorate NASA's historic Juno mission to Jupiter. You can hear a snippet of "Everything (The Universe)" below.

According to Rolling Stone, it has a "spectral, moody opening" and, in the final fourth of the song, becomes "a psychedelic guitar freak out." Towards the end, he sings, "The universe can only be as big as my mind," James recorded "Everything (The Universe)" with Lydia Burrell, the pseudonym of Alexander Smith, who also hails from James' hometown of Lexington, Ky.

The song can be purchased at iTunes and is part of a collaboration between NASA and Apple Music designed to "enhance the agency's efforts to inform and excite the public about dramatic missions of exploration like Juno." On Thursday, Trent Reznor and his soundtrack collaborator Atticus Ross unveiled their take, "Juno," which incorporated recordings of Jupiter’s electromagnetic fields. Also participating in the project are Weezer, country star Brad Paisley and GZA from the Wu-Tang Clan.

Launched in 2011, Juno is expected to enter Jupiter's orbit on Monday (July 4), where it will remain for 20 months and circle the planet 37 times. According to NASA's website, its mission is to study Jupiter's atmosphere and its magnetic and gravity fields to "understand the origin and evolution of Jupiter" and provide "critical knowledge for understanding the planetary systems being discovered around other stars."
