With John Metchie out this spring, other guys are getting an opportunity to get extra reps this spring and Javon Baker and Xavier Williams are taking full advantage.

During Wednesday's post-practice press conference, coach Saban provided some positive feedback on Baker and Williams. "I've seen improvement in both guys," Saban said. Javon Baker plays with a lot of toughness. He's a very physical guy. I think he has a much better grasp of the offense this year, so his mental errors are way down. His production is up, which I think is a good thing."

Baker came to Tuscaloosa as a four-star recruit out of Powder Springs, Georgia in the 2020 recruiting cycle. As a freshman, he hauled in just two receptions for 15 yards. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, Baker adds size to this receiving core. He possesses strong hands and is a polished route runner.

Xavier "Ziggy" Williams came to Alabama as a four-star back in 2018. Williams was featured more in the wide receiver rotation towards the end of the season, recording a reception in each of the Tide’s final three games.

“Ziggy is kind of a jack-of-all-trades,” Saban said. “He can play about all the positions and he’s pretty good doing them all. He’s got some ability to return punts, so he’s made really nice progress. He has experience, he knows what to do. I think he can always go in the game and help out whenever he’s called on.”

Williams and Baker earned first-team reps alongside Slade Bolden during Alabama's first scrimmage. Both also caught a touchdown from Bryce Young.

The Crimson Tide are tasked with replacing DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle, two guys who will be first-round picks come this months NFL draft. They will need Baker and Williams to continue making progress throughout spring practice.

Alabama will have its second scrimmage Saturday, April 10th inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium.
