Jason Isbell Has a Role in Upcoming ‘Deadwood’ Movie

Jason Isbell has a role in the upcoming Deadwood movie. The Americana star recently shared photos of himself on the set of the in-production film, a sequel to HBO's Emmy Awards-winning Western series of the same name.

"Don't call it a western," Isbell captioned an Instagram photo posted on Sunday (Nov. 11). The selfie-style picture shows the singer-songwriter in a dress shirt, tie and overcoat, in a sunny, wooded location. A second photo shows Isbell's feet near a sign that reads "Deadwood Art Dept. Parking Only."

On Twitter the night before (Nov. 10), Isbell shared his excitement and (humorously odd) concern about taking on a movie role: "I’m getting up early tomorrow to be in a movie and I’m super excited about it but do the wardrobe people have socks?" he wondered to his followers. "My socks would NOT work for this movie and I’m concerned. The movie is not about socks though. But still they might show."

For those concerned about Isbell's potential sock problems, the artist later provided an update: "They found me some socks."

There is no word on what role Isbell plays in the Deadwood movie, or if he will be using his musical talents onscreen.

Deadline reports that the Deadwood movie had begun filming as of early November, 12 years after the original series ended its three-season run on HBO in 2006. The outlet reports that original cast members Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, Paula Malcomson, John Hawkes, Anna Gunn, Dayton Callie, Brad Dourif, Robin Weigert, William Sanderson, Kim Dickens and Gerald McRaney will all be in the film, along with new cast member Jade Pettyjohn.

The Deadwood series focused on the goings-on in Deadwood, S.D., in the 1870s, as the area grew from an encampment to an official town. HBO reports that the movie will find the original characters reuniting after 10 years, to celebrate South Dakota achieving statehood. "Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened," according to Deadline, "as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought."

David Milch created and produced the Deadwood series for HBO. He wrote the forthcoming Deadwood film as well, and will serve as an executive producer, while Daniel Minahan is directing the movie. In July, HBO President Casey Bloys shared that the movie could be in theaters in Spring 2019.
