Jaclyn Foster, one of Tuscaloosa Academy's middle school instructors, received the 2021 Alabama History Teacher of the Year award from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History

Presented annually, this award highlights the importance of history education by honoring memorable teachers.

Parents, students, teachers and administrators nominated over 8,510 teachers nationwide, but only one teacher per state receives the award.

Foster has been teaching for 18 years. She currently teaches middle school civics, U.S. history and human geography.

“She brings history alive in her classroom by creating engaging and innovative projects for her students including inserting them into historical pictures,” read a Wednesday press release from TA, commending Foster for her work. “When students leave her classroom they have not only learned valuable information, they have become engaged and informed citizens.”

Foster's passion for history and technology extends beyond her classroom through several honorable organizations. She is a 2021 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow with the National Geographic Society and Lindblad Expeditions and has been a trainer for the National Geographic Educator Certification program.

Foster will receive a $1,000 honorarium and Tuscaloosa Academy will receive a core archive of American history books, alongside other educational materials from Gilder Lehrman.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, founded in 1994, is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to American history education for students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade.

The institute also provides primary source materials to teachers, students and the public.
