West Alabama Monday Briefing
Good morning, West Alabama! It is September 30, 2024, the last day of September.
Has everyone recovered from that Alabama - Georgia game Saturday night. The emotional roller coaster of the two halves had everybody tense. But what a performance by now Heisman trophy favorite Jalen Milroe and 17-year-old true freshman Ryan "Hollywood" Williams. His nickname fit the occasion. That game was like something out of a Hollywood script.
But we can't just pat Milroe and Williams on the back. The win took a complete team effort, nothing less than defensive back Zabien Brown, intercepting UGA QB Carson Beck's pass in the end zone to secure the victory.
The Saturday effort pushed the Crimson Tide to the top of the Associated Press Top 25 in college football this week. Bama is #2 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Forecast:
Hale County Emergency Management Agency Director Russell Weeden has been deployed with a FEMA Strike Force of 125 ambulances since before Hurricane Helene slammed into the southeast last week. He has been working long days to rescuing trapped residents and those in need of medical assistance. Weeden says you cannot imagine the sheer size of the disaster.
The death toll now stands at 123 with thousands injured.
Recovery assets are pouring from Alabama into the areas devastated by Hurricane Helene last week. The effort comes as the death toll has topped 125 and continues to rise.
While the recovery continues another tropical disturbance developing in the Caribbean is being watched closely. But ABC 3340 Chief Meteorologist James Spann warns it is much too early to know anything about size, strength or direction.

With Tuscaloosa breaking its previous annual homicide number, a “Cease Fire City-Wide Revival” is set to begin at 6:00 tonight at Christ Baptist Church located at 2610 Greensboro Ave. Area residents concerned about the continuing violence are urged to attend.
The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Alabama and its top election official, Secretary of State Wes Allen. DOJ is accusing the state of illegally purging people from voter rolls too close to the November election.
Federal officials said the purge violates the “quiet period provision” of the National Voter Registration Act that prohibits the systemic removal of names from voter rolls 90 days before a federal election.
Glock switches convert semiautomatic pistols to automatic weapons significantly increasing firepower. They have been used in numerous fatal and non-fatal shootings alike including that recent mass shooting in Birmingham. That has prompted State Rep. Jwendolyn Givan to propose legislation that would ban them in Birmingham.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin is calling for a state ban on Glock switches. But Alabama Senior Republican U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville believes “there’s no reason” to enact a state-level ban on Glock switches.
Tuberville's reasons that “When people have [Glock switches], and we find out they have it, put them in jail.” Critics point out that the victims are already dead by then.
