Low temps in the TEENS over the next several days in the region.

Friday and Saturday night lows are 13 and 18 degrees. Ok, that's cold for Alabama.

I would argue that is cold for any city but I know folks up north would dispute that notion.

In these cold temps, we must find ways to get and stay warm.

Local retailers, like Port 1 Landscape Supply in Northport,  is seeing an uptick in sales of their bundles of firewood.

Port 1 owner, John Powell, told me they are seeing increased sales of both firewood and natural stone for building fire pits.

The firewood comes bundled and ready to use, like the photo below.

You need to remember that even if your house is heated to a comfortable temperature, the pipes inside the walls can be much colder than what your thermometer reads.

Most experts advise running your hot and cold faucet at a very slow drip to protect against freezing.

The issue of portable heaters is much debated when the weather turns bitter cold. Of course, you must make sure nothing is near the heat source or blocking it in any way.

If you are going away for the holidays, it might be worth asking a neighbor to check on your home during the colder days.

Stores like Academy Sports & Outdoors and Dick's Sporting Goods in Tuscaloosa, have a variety of ultra-warm clothing to bundle up with if you have to be outside.

Sales are up at these retailers, as well as many others in the Tuscaloosa area, as we all brace for this bitter cold on the way.
