Do you happen to have a penny that is worth over $300,000.00 laying around? Yes, you read that correctly…that is a lot of zeros!

You just might have one and not even realize it! We tend to not pay attention to the spare change that is laying around. Our car cup holders and our homes are always filled with spare change.

So pull out all your spare change and let’s look for the one that can land you a whole bunch of bills! No, not the bills that come in the mail, I’m talking about the bills in our wallets.

Well for one, look for all your 1943 pennies and set them to the side.  All 1943 pennies were supposed to be minted from steel, this was because all copper was needed during World War II.

Thankfully for us, some were minted from copper, of course, that was done in error.  That error can be very valuable for us.  Now there are plenty of “fakes” out there. So, how do you spot a fake?

Number one - pull out your kitchen scale, a real copper 1943 penny should weigh over 3 grams.  Number two - it should not stick to any magnet.

Number 3 - people attempt to make copper 1943 pennies from 1948 pennies by grinding down the curves. Yes, they make a 3 from the number 8.

Here’s a tip. On a real 1943 penny, the bottom of the 3 sits below the number 4. If they are lined up straight, it’s a fake! So go check under your couch cushion, in-between the car seats, or just crack open that piggy bank.  You may have something really valuable!
