Northside Rams Sharpen Skills in High-Energy Practice
Early morning practice for the Northside Rams as Jones and his staff prepare their players for the season. Coach Robbie Jones invited me to practice this morning to get a glimpse of how they are preparing.
About The Coach's
Robbie Jones, previously the assistant coach, took the head coaching position in 2022, leading his team with other notable Northside coaches such as David Peoples, who is also the head coach for varsity basketball, Lance Green, who previously coached boys, and girls basketball at Northside High School, and Tommy Honeycutt, a U.S. Veteran and softball head coach who was also named Coach of the Year in 2017. Many new faces have joined the Northside coaching staff to make an impact on this team.
Robbie and his team of super coaches have an edge that most programs do not have, being they have worked together for a long time and know how to get things done. Other notable coaches include Derrick Miles, who took a position as P.E. coach of Northside Middle School in 2014, and Will Anderson, currently the head soccer coach at Northside.
Miles and Anderson have been essential to this coaching staff since coming to Northside, working hard to help this team progress each year.
Meet The Captains
After practice, I was allowed to speak with some players about the team and how they are preparing for the season.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Number 50, Left Tackle Brodie Honeycutt, for the Northside Rams. When asked how it feels to move up in classification, Brodie gave me his thoughts on the team stating, "I feel great man. Last year, we were in a tough region, and we got moved to this one; but we have been working hard, I believe we will do good this upcoming season." When asked how it is having Jones as a head coach he told me "I couldn't ask for a better coach, we struggled last year, but it's more than football with him and that's the biggest thing about it."
When interviewing Parker Shirley, a senior linebacker and tight-end for the Rams on how he also feels about playing better competition he says. "It feels good, We aren't really worried about it, we're working hard to get better, and getting more aggressive." When asked how they plan to fix the mistakes they may have made last year that led them short of an ideal season, Shirley says "We aren't really worried about last year, that's in our past, we are looking ahead and working to do better for ourselves for this year."
The third player I was able to interview, Carson Smith, a junior inside linebacker and tight-end with the Northside Rams, had this to say about this year's season. "I'm feeling pretty good, we have tons more leadership, and the practices have gotten more intense. We are looking way better off than last year." When asked about a time the team has come together off of the field Carson says "This offseason we all came together, would drive each other just making sure everyone was able to show up for whatever the team had to do, motivating each other in a way to give max effort in everything we do."
We Talking Bout' Practice?
"Practice makes perfect," is the age-old saying. Coach Jones is keeping the intensity with this team as they prepare for this season and the challenges they may face.
