How To Make The Perfect Sweet Tea in Tuscaloosa, Alabama
One of the most perfect and most southern drinks I can think of is sweet tea. The question is, how do you make the perfect batch of sweet tea?
I used to consider myself the gatekeeper when it came to making sweet tea. I had what I thought to be the perfect formula. I'd use about 3-4 cups of sugar and a freshly squeezed lemon. It came out perfect every time and everyone who tried my sweet tea loved it.
Recently, my wife has been making sweet tea for our household and I have to admit, it's better than mine. My sweet te has been tasting a little too sweet and trying to correct the problem only ruins it. I don't know how she does it, but my wife's sweet tea comes out perfect every time!
I'm now starting to wonder if there is a set formula to making sweet te in Alabama. The Yellowhammer State is known for having some of the best southern foods and drinks. I think it only makes sense that it's a special "Alabama way" to make sweet tea.
I came across a Youtube video that describes the best way to make Alabama sweet tea.
According to the video, you must:
- Use family-sized Luzinne tea bags
- Boil about 2 cups of water
- Pour boiling water over tea bags and let sit for 30 minutes
- Remove tea bags and add just over a cup of sugar
- Add ice cubes to cool it down then cold water to make a gallon
This can't be how people in Alabama really make their sweet tea is it? One cup of sugar is enough? Maybe I'm wrong but that doesn't seem like enough. No lemon? Huh?! whoever made this video, I hope I never get to try their sweet tea.
