We have no idea what part Heath Ledger would have played in Christopher Nolan’s Batman series if he hadn’t died shockingly, six months before The Dark Knight’s release. Fans have suspected that Ledger’s game-changing Joker maybe would have made an appearance in The Dark Knight Rises, though neither Nolan nor anyone else involved in the movies would ever say for sure. But in a new interview (that’s actually an old interview just now making the rounds), Ledger’s sister confirms that he would have stuck around for another movie in the series.

The interview with Kate Ledger, published by Australian site news.com (via /Film), details the siblings’ relationship, and answers the age-old question: Would Ledger’s Joker have been back for more?

He was so proud of what he had done in [The Dark Knight]. And I know he had plans for another Batman. He loved working with Chris Nolan and Christian Bale… He just had the best time ever doing that film. When he came home at Christmas, he couldn’t wait to tell us all about it and he was doing the voice and laughing, showing me all the rushes. We had a great time.

While Cillian Murphy’s Scarecrow and Tom Hardy’s Bane were suitably terrifying Batman villains, nothing could quite match the Joker’s diabolical devil-may-care attitude. Ledger took the character and grounded him in a sort of twisted reality that won him a posthumous Oscar and multiple lifetimes of fan adoration. If he had had the opportunity to appear in The Dark Knight Rises, even just for a cameo, I doubt there’s anyone around who wouldn’t have loved it.
