Police in Tuscaloosa County have charged a West Alabama law enforcement officer with felony domestic violence after a Tuesday morning incident.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said in a release that Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's deputies were called to investigate a domestic disturbance in the Taylorwood area before dawn Wednesday morning.

Officers found Joseph Allen Nail, 36, had been involved in a physical altercation with his wife.

Nail is currently a deputy with the Hale County Sheriff's Office, Kennedy said, so the VCU was asked to handle the investigation.

Kennedy said both Nail and the woman received minor injuries in their fight, but officers found enough evidence for a magistrate to issue a warrant to charge Nail with felony domestic violence strangulation.

Nail was arrested and placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where bond was set at $15,000.

State domestic violence law will require him to remain jailed for at 24 hours before he is eligible to make bond, Kennedy said.

“Deputy Nail’s actions have betrayed the public trust and the oath he took to uphold the laws of Alabama therefore he can no longer work for me nor the citizens of Hale County," Hale County Sheriff Kenneth W. Ellis said on Facebook.

No further details were available Wednesday afternoon.
