Free School Lunch Program Will Give More Meals at Once to Reduce Exposure

The Tuscaloosa City School system will change the way it is distributing meals to children Wednesday, giving families more food at once in an attempt to reduce contact and risk of exposure to the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Lesley Bruinton, a TCS spokeswoman, said beginning Wednesday TCS will give each child three days of breakfasts and lunches at one time so that families only have to visit food pickup sites one more time this week.

Beginning Monday, April 13th, the schools will provide breakfasts and lunches for the entire week, limiting potential exposure for families, employees and food suppliers.

Food will only be distributed Monday next week, so families looking to take advantage of the free meals will need to make plans to visit a site Monday.

Bruinton also warned that social distancing guidelines must be followed during the once-weekly food distribution, warning that TCS may suspend or cancel the program if the families who utilize it do not practice proper precaution.
