Former Alabama Defensive Back Passes Away After Battle With ALS
Former Alabama safety Alan Pizzitola passed away this week after a two-year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS.
Pizzitola played for the Crimson Tide, initially as a walk-on, and then as a scholarship player, from 1972-75. He accumulated 93 tackles and two interceptions during his time at the Capstone and helped the Tide win three straight SEC Championships.
The All-SEC and two-time Academic All-SEC honoree is considered the first player in Alabama history to wear the jersey number 4 as single digits were introduced at Alabama in the early 1970s.
Pizzitola founded Business Interiors Inc. located in Birmingham, Alabama in 1987. After finding success in the business world Pizzitola partnered with former teammate Ricky Davis to make a large donation to the Athletic Department’s Crimson Tradition Fund in 2006.
The Defensive Backs Meeting Room is now named in Davis and Pizzitola's honor in the Mal Moore Athletic Building.
