Flashback: The Original Carpool Karaoke With James Corden and George Michael
As tributes continue to pour on social media over the passing of George Michael, an old comedy clip from 2011 featuring James Corden and Michael in an early version of Carpool Karaoke has resurfaced on the Internet.
Before he was the host of The Late, Late Show in the US, Corden played a character named Smithey in the British sitcom Gavin & Stacey. The show ran from 2007 to 2010, and Corden would later reprise the role for Comic Relief's annual Red Nose Day for charity.
In the video, Corden picks up George Michael as Smithey and the two begin to belt out some of Michael's classics, including "Freedom" and "I'm Your Man."
This past summer, Corden told Stephen Colbert (courtesy of Us Magazine) on The Late Show that he had a different idea for the sketch. “My original idea was to pick George Michael up from prison in a car. And then we realized, ‘Maybe we’ll lose the prison, but what if there’s still some fun for me and George to be in the car and we’ll sing some Wham! songs?’”
