The city of Northport's retail committee has reached a preliminary agreement with Marriott Hotels to bring a 4-story, $15 million Courtyard Marriott to the old Boy's Club property on Bridge Avenue.

City Councilman Jeff Hogg, who co-chairs the committee, said the city council will meet this Tuesday night to discuss the deal and vote on a agreement to use the guidelines of Alabama's constitutional Amendment 772 to use some city money to partially fund the project. Any money spent under that clause is paid back to the city over a long term through increased taxes.

Hogg said the planned hotel will have four floors, 104 rooms, a pool, a bistro and bar, a fitness center and a patio with a fireplace.

"For the past three years, our Retail Committee has worked hard to try and attract not only quality businesses, but recognizable brand names as well," Hogg said. "We feel that this project could set the tone for the future of Northport by improving an area that has sat vacant for a long time. This project also helps reshape the face of Northport as you come across the bridge into our City. This area will now become a major focus area for future development. We are very excited about the possibility of this project and what it will mean to our City and its growth."

The city council will meet Tuesday night to hear the publics thoughts on the project and vote whether to approve the incentive package.
