One facet of life we must accept is loss, and one of the hardest things to accept is the death of a child, no matter how old or young.

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, established by former President Ronald Reagan in 1988.

Three decades later, it would seem that the observance would be more widely known, especially with as many families affected by miscarriages, stillbirth, SIDS, and other ailments that claim the lives of the unborn and newborns.

In Tuscaloosa, events have been planned in honor of the observance.

On October 15th, the Black Warrior Community Action Team invites parents, friends, and the community are to join in the lighting of candles in remembrance of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss. This day is recognized worldwide with the “International Wave of Light,” a lighting of candles at 7:00 pm to remember and honor those that left our lives too soon due to miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant death. Then Saturday, October 19, a balloon release will be held at the Northbrook Apartments Open Field. This event is said to be in support of those who may have suffered a miscarriage, SIDS, stillbirth, or abortion and may have emotional turmoil as a result.

With as common as each of these is, no one should suffer alone. Thanks to the organizers of these events for opening their arms to mothers who at some point felt theirs as empty.
