This weekend, dozens of sharks washed up on a beach in Mobile, Alabama. According to WKRG, Their carcasses were discovered scattered in the sand, some with fishing nets still around them and some vacationers complained they smelled of boiled seafood.

Some individuals tried to bury the sharks, but the individual who found them estimated there were over 40 of what appeared to be black tip sharks.

Despite those fishing nets, it's still unclear what killed the sharks and how they ended up on the beach but the State Marine Resources Division and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab are investigating.
