2020 will be a year without the West Alabama State Fair, as organizers decided to cancel the annual event.

The Board of Directors voted for the cancellation of the fair and its Barbecue Cook-Off today (September 9th), sharing their concerns via a Facebook post.

"After reviewing local and national health data, making financial projections, and weighing the additional efforts associated with hosting an event during a pandemic, we are disappointed to have to make this decision," the post stated.

The West Alabama State Fair is operated by United Cerebral Palsy of West Alabama, a non-profit organization that has seen a significant impact on its operating budget as a result of the novel Coronavirus pandemic, stating that they have seen a severe revenue shortfall that also contributed to the fair's cancellation.

"The nationwide COVID-19 pandemic has placed an overwhelming fiscal hardship on our financial budget due to our inability to provide crucial vocational, therapeutic, and other developmental support services to the individuals who participate in our Day Habilitation program," the post stated.

Event organizers also expressed their gratitude for sponsors and vendors and said they look forward to hosting an event once it is safe to do so.
