Tuscaloosa City Schools Encourage Parents to Question Students about TV Program
Today, the Tuscaloosa City Schools notified parents of a popular fictitious Netfix series in which a teen leaves behind messages, detailing why she killed herself. It is recommended that parents check with their children to see if they are viewing this show, as it may not be appropriate for their age.
The program, "13 Reasons Why," is based on a book by Jay Asher. It is said to contain "strong and graphic themes of suicide, bullying, sexual assault, drug use and other social issues." In addition, the system warns that students who may have a vulnerability to this content include those with any mental health issues, those with at-risk behaviors, and those who are involved with alcohol or substance abuse or have had suicidal thoughts. The series is rated MA for mature audiences.
