Experimental singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe has just announced her seventh studio album, Birth of Violence, and a corresponding North American headlining acoustic tour. Hear the first single, "The Mother Road," toward the bottom of the post.

The album opener is a detour from the more haunting atmospheres Chelsea Wolfe typically channels, embracing a cold minimalist approach that layers on the intensity as it unfolds.

Read the lyrics to "The Mother Road" below.

took the mother road
down to goddess flesh
I swallowed the key
I want to learn to swallow my pain
hallowed the fruit, hallowed thy name
guess I needed something to break me
guess I needed something to shake me up
guess I needed someone to break me
guess I needed someone to shake me out
afraid to live, afraid to die
building a broken but precious web
like a spider in Chernobyl
and when the cattle low, something is on the horizon
I do not have a child
but i’m old enough to know some pain
and i’m hell bent on loving you
women know what it is to endure
guess I needed something to break me
guess I needed something to shake me up
guess I needed someone to break me
guess I needed someone to shake me out
it was you
it was you
bloom and eclipse them, wake up and transform
bloom and eclipse them, wake up and transform
bloom and eclipse them, wake up and transform
bloom and eclipse them, wake up and transform

"The songs describe an internal awakening of feminine energy, a connection to the maternal spirit of the Earth, and a defiant stance against the destructive and controlling forces of a greedy and hostile patriarchy," states a press release.

The new record was recorded in Wolfe's remote home in northern California.

Commenting on the new material, she said, "I've been in a state of constant motion for the past eight years or so; touring, moving, playing new stages, exploring new places and meeting new people-an incredible time of learning and growing as a musician and performer. But after awhile, I was beginning to lose a part of myself. I needed to take some time away from the road to get my head straight, to learn to take better care of myself, and to write and record as much as I can while I have 'Mercury in my hands,' as a wise friend put it."

Birth of Violence arrives on Sept. 13 on Sargent House. Pre-order your copy of the album here.
