‘Captain Marvel’ Soars to $1 Billion at Worldwide Box Office
Captain Marvel is the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to pass the all-important $1 billion worldwide box-office threshold. Passing that number this week places the movie in seventh place all-time on the MCU’s top box-office list. Here are the six films that have grossed more than it (at least so far; I suspect at least one of these movies may get passed before all is said and done):
- Avengers: Infinity War - $2.04 billion
- The Avengers - $1.51 billion
- Avengers: Age of Ultron - $1.40 billion
- Black Panther - $1.34 billion
- Iron Man 3 - $1.21 billion
- Captain America: Civil War - $1.15 billion
Captain Marvel hitting $1 billion means that three of the last four Marvel movies have made at least that much money — Cap, Avengers: Infinity War, and Black Panther. (The only exception is Ant-Man and the Wasp, which “only” made $622.7 million worldwide.)
To celebrate the occasion Marvel released a brand-new poster for the film:
Despite its extremely strong showing so far, Captain Marvel is about to face some stiff box-office competition, including from another Captain Marvel movie. The original character with that name has his own film, called Shazam, opening in theaters this Friday. And then three weeks after that Avengers: Endgame opens, likely to shatter all previous Marvel box-office records. That’ll make four out of the last five MCU titles to make $1 billion. That is just an unbelievable streak.
