The Weinstein Company’s Latest Film Made $742 at the Box Office
Adjusted for inflation, the original Amityville Horror from 1979 earned over $300 million.
Adjusted for inflation, the latest Amityville made $700.
That’s not a typo, and that’s not $700 million; that’s 700 bucks. Two zeros. That’s the word from Box Office Mojo and Variety, which reports that this new Amityville, aka Amityville: The Awakening, is just the latest bit of bad news for the Weinstein Company, still reeling in the wake of the decades of allegations surrounding its former boss, Harvey Weinstein.
The Awakening is the company’s first release since the Weinstein scandal exploded, and in 10 theaters around the country last weekend, the movie grossed just $742. According to Box Office Mojo, that makes it the third-lowest grossing movie of the last 365 days. Yikes.
There are some notable mitigating circumstances here. Amityville: The Awakening has been bounced around the release schedule, and it actually premiered online (for free!) on Google Play a few weeks ago. So if you did want to watch a new Amityville Horror the only conceivable reason you would have to go out to the theater would be if you don’t have access to the internet (or you’re a really dedicated Apple user).
It seemed like a questionable business model at the time it was announced (at least to sell tickets; if the Weinsteins got paid a boatload by Google, more power to them) but $742 is particularly bad. TWC had no comment for Variety when asked about the movie’s performance; most of the company’s upcoming lineup, like the supposed awards contender The Current War, have been pushed back or delayed in light of the ongoing situation involving Harvey Weinstein. If you want to watch Amityville: The Awakening, it’s still available for free on Google Play.
