Alabama Women’s Basketball Faces Auburn in SEC Tournament Opener
The Tide has been successful against the Tigers so far this season, completing the season sweep over its arch-rival.
The first matchup in Tuscaloosa came down to the wire, as Alabama picked up its first SEC win 56-53 over Auburn. In that game, JaMya Mingo-Young and Brittany Davis led the way with 14 and 11, respectively.
The second matchup in Auburn saw the Tide snap a five-game losing streak, earning a 75-68 win over the Tigers. Davis led the way with 24 points while Khyla Wade-Warren and Megan Abrams added 15 and 10, respectively.
“We have our hands full and regardless of if we’ve beaten Auburn or they’ve beaten us, both teams are much improved and it’ll be a brand new test for us on Wednesday,” said Alabama head coach Kristy Curry. “We have to be disciplined on both sides of the ball and we just have to [show] a tremendous amount of grit to take care of what we need to.”
If Alabama wins its first-round game, the Tide will then take on the No. 6 seed, 24th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. In the lone regular-season matchup, the Crimson Tide built a 21-point lead at halftime but the Bulldogs battled back and earned a 72-68 win in Athens.
If Alabama wins the quarterfinal matchup over Georgia, the Tide will face the No. 3 seed, 18th-ranked Tennessee. Alabama split the season series with the Lady Vols, dropping the first matchup in Knoxville, 62-44, and gaining the upset victory in the second, 74-64, in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama will need a magical run in the SEC Tournament if it looks to earn back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
Tipoff in Bridgestone Arena is set for 1:30 p.m. CST (or 30 minutes after game one) on the SEC Network.
