Alabama Department of Public Health Reports Widespread Influenza Outbreak
Now is the time to get your flu shot: the Alabama Department of Public Health reports widespread cases of influenza activity across the state.
In West Central Alabama, over 6% of all visits to the doctor are due to influenza-related illnesses (ILI). ADPH reports over half of ILI cases are in children and young adults, which explains why many school districts were forced to cancel classes last week.
Flu types A and B have been reported in Alabama, and in 2020, three people have died as a result of influenza infection. Key factors that track influenza activity remain high and increased last week.
The best way to prevent the flu is to get your flu shot. The ADPH also recommends you practice good hygiene, washing hands frequently and remembering to cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing.
