President Woodrow Wilson first prolcaimed a day of remembrance, named Armistice Day, for November 11, 1919. He stated, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations." Over time, Armistice Day evolved to recognize and celebrate all military veterans, not just those who lost their lives in World War 1. Congress amended an act on June 1, 1954 replaceing 'Armistice' with 'Veterans' and the holiday has been known as Veterans' Day ever since.

To all of those who have served and are currently serving, we say 'Thank You'
