Yesterday was my first Mother's Day. I was treated to lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, Jim & Nick's, and allowed to be lazy the entire day. It was awesome. I even got a piece of Lemon Icebox pie to-go and ate it at home, in bed, watching a Law & Order SVU Marathon. BLISS.

I learned something yesterday, though... I had always thought of Mother's Day as a time to tell your Mom you love and appreciate her, buy her some presents, take her out to brunch. I never realized that Mother's Day was about so much more than all those things.

To me, it was a chance to celebrate actually being a Mother. I looked at my daughter and was overwhelmed with love and joy. I never thought I would be able to have children of my own; being able to actually celebrate the holiday was beyond my wildest dreams.

I also realized Mother's Day wasn't about any one mom in particular: it's about all of us, all those who nurture and love selflessly. It's about all moms: those with children young and old, those with sweet angel babies looking down on them from heaven. It's about motherhood--the good, the bad, all of it.

I hope all the Moms out there had a great day yesterday; I hope they know their sacrifices and struggles are appreciated, that the world today is better because of them.
