I love winged eyeliner: it's sophisticated, sexy, and retro all at the same time. You can do a simple thin wing for day or a darker wing for night--but you've got to have the right eyeliner game or your wings will never take flight. Okay--that was a terrible pun, but whatever. I finally figured out how to get the perfect wing every time, and now I am passing that knowledge on to you.

Getting the perfect wing takes practice. Once you've tried this technique a few times, you'll be a pro. Try starting with a kohl eyeliner--they tend to be a bit more forgiving--before you graduate up to a liquid liner; liquid creates a crisp line, but your mistakes will stand out more. I'm obsessed with eyeliner pens like this one from Eyeko of London or this more affordable option from L'Oreal.

Y'all ready for this?

We begin with a picture of my eye. You'll notice I already have mascara on. Putting your mascara on first will help you as you master the wing--your eyelashes will help to guide you in placing the line.

Yeah; I busted out my Microsoft Paint skills for this one, girls. I'm using yellow to show where you should place the line--just glide it across your lid evenly.

Now we set the outer edge of our wing. Place the eyeliner pencil/pen at the outer corner of your eye and draw a line up at about a 60-degree angle. You can take it up as far as you want, but I usually do about a quarter to half an inch.

The next step is to draw a line from your lash line to the tip of the outer wing. You're pretty much drawing a triangle here.

FILL IN DAT TRIANGLE, GIRL, and BOOM--winged eyeliner. Easy enough, right? You can end here or check out the bonus tip below.

BONUS TIP TIME!

Make you eyes appear larger by lining your lower waterline with white or nude eyeliner.

Now line the bottom of your eyes about 1/3 to 1/2 the way in. Smudge it out if you want or leave it clean and simple.

SUCCESS!

It really is that easy. I used to look like a total hot mess any time I attempted winged eyeliner, but now I rock it on the daily. The key is to practice often.

Here's a shot of my normal "daytime" look--I recently purchased Urban Decay's Naked3, so I'm all about those rosy gold shades. Anyway, I always finish the look with a little wing. It's fun; it's flirty--and now you know my secret to success!
