Sophomore Bryce Young was named to the Davey O’Brien QB Class of 2021 on Tuesday. Young is now eligible to be voted a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award. He would be the second consecutive Alabama player to receive the honor, joining Mac Jones.

The semifinalists will be chosen based on voting from the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee as well as the first round of the fan vote. Fans can vote on the Davey O’Brien Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts, and the top five vote recipients on each social media platform will receive a boost from the Selection Committee. The list of 16 semifinals will be revealed on Tuesday, Nov. 9, the finalists will be selected on Tuesday, Nov. 23 and the winner will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 9 on The Home Depot College Football Awards.

Through the eight games, Young has completed 187-of-267 passes (70 percent) for 2,453 yards and SEC-leading 26 touchdowns. He ranks second in the SEC starters in passer rating at 177.1. Young was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week following wins over Miami, Southern Miss and Tennessee.

“He’s an easy guy to coach,” said coach Saban. “He tries to do everything the right way. He wants to do everything the right way. He always prepares well for the game. He’s got a great personality. He’s got really good leadership qualities about him. It’s really important to him to sort of be the best that he can be, which you always love in competitors and you always love in players.”

A former five-star quarterback in the class of 2020, Young has collected a number NIL deals since the policy came into effect on Thursday, July 1, including one with Logan’s Roadhouse last week. Coach Saban talked yesterday about how Young has handled the hype.

“I think he’s done a really good job,” Saban said. “I haven’t seen it affect his performance, his preparation. He’s one of those guys that’s focused on the right stuff. He understands that his value is created by performance, and he’s focused on his performance. And players should come to Alabama to wanna win a championship and create value for themselves, and the smart ones know that they create value for themselves by how they perform and that none of those things really should be a factor relative to all that.”

Alabama will return to game action next Saturday, Nov. 6 against LSU.
